"Oh! Agent Atwater--we heard you were coming." She glanced dubiously at Natalie, who still recited
the Twenty-third Psalm like an autistic eulogist. "I'll see if he's available."
She went over and exchanged words with McCord. He smiled at Dan and Natalie and beckoned to
them, evidently enjoying the opportunity to grant an imperial audience.
Simon McCord had no use for colored contact lenses; he let his violet eyes blaze in all their unsettling
splendor. Although Simon was whipcord-lean and younger than his dead brother Arthur, Dan
immediately noted the family resemblance of the wide nose and broad, flattish face. With free-hanging
lobes, Simon's large ears stuck out from his bald head like mutant butterfly wings.
"Mr. Atwater, good to meet you." He clasped his hands in front of him in an affectation of piety. "And
you--Lindstrom, isn't it?"
Natalie's lips worked furiously, but her words had slipped into silence again.
"I almost didn't recognize you with that unflattering wig. Too busy with that protective mantra to greet
your old instructor?" Without even blinking, McCord stepped onto the grave in front of him, positioning
himself directly over the heart of the buried corpse beneath him. "Perhaps you need a refresher course...
."
Natalie snapped her mouth shut, and her face hardened into a mask of cold resentment. "That won't be
necessary, Professor."
She stepped onto the grave nearest to her and put her hands on her hips with mocking nonchalance.
McCord laughed. "Perhaps you haven't forgotten everything I taught you. I presume you're here about
my brother's death."
"His murder, you mean," Dan corrected. "Since you're one of the only people alive who knew where
Arthur was hiding, we wondered if you might know who killed him."
"I have no idea. I didn't make it my business to keep track of Arthur and his acquaintances."
"'Am I my brother's keeper?'" Natalie quoted darkly.
McCord glowered at her. "It's no secret that Arthur and I were never... close. But he was still my
brother, and I would never betray my own flesh and blood."
"You don't seem too broken up about the killing."
He resumed his smile of paternal beneficence. "Because I know that death is merely a prelude to the
True Life."
Natalie quivered with outrage, but Dan cut her off before she could express it. "Can you tell us where
you were Friday night?" he asked McCord.
"Of course. I've been here in Seattle for the past two weeks, suffering police protection in that dismal
apartment building."
"And what about your students?"
McCord's smile slipped. "What about them?"
Dan nodded in the direction of the departed disciples. "They seem very devoted to you. Very obedient."
